"Green" Goods 'must be the norm"

Filed under: Government News  Sustainable Design & Technology

Eco-friendly products shall need to become the "normal" products on shop shelves in the future if Britain is to tackle Climate Change successfully, according to a Government Report.

Environment Minister, Joan Ruddock, said the public also needed to see "the full picture" of what goes into producing the goods they buy and what happens to them once they are thrown away. The Sustainable Products and Materials Report claimed UK households could save more than £5bn a year on bills by buying energy-saving products.

Progress Report on Sustainable Products and Materials (10 July 2008)

DEFRA has published a report setting out the Government’s story on sustainable products and materials. It is a progress report, and so describes what has been done and work which is already planned.

It includes a number of suggestions on the way forward, as well as questions for discussion. DEFRA wants to stimulate debate about how Government and Business can work together to reduce the impacts of products and materials across their whole lifecycle.

They want to hear people’s views, which shall be gathered and used to inform discussions with stakeholders on the way forward. Send your views to products.policy@defra.gsi.gov.uk .

Window panes to soak up sun

Windows could be used as Solar Panels, thanks to new technology that uses transparent dyes to transfer energy across the surface to power cells in the frames.

Engineers at Massachusetts Institute of Technology believe the system, which would slash the cost of generating solar electricity, could be on the market within three years.
